Poverty hits university hopes Study: money problems affect children's growth

THREE in 10 Hong Kong children whose parents are short of money do not expect to go to university, a survey reveals. In well-off families, one in five children does not expect to go to university.
Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service (浸會愛群社會服務處) surveyed 468 Chinese and ethnic minority families, between December and January. It wanted to find out how financial pressures affect child growth.
Parents were mostly pressured by medical costs, children’s education and extracurricular activities. Half of the children in 367 Chinese families felt they did not have enough money. About 64 percent of these children have low confidence. Fifty-three percent of children with no money problems felt the same.
Over half of the children with money problems had low social skills. It was only 37 percent for those who were from well-off families. Researchers found 48 percent of ethnic-minority families faceddiscrimination while less than 10 percent of Chinese families had the same problem. Researchers say it is important to develop a platform that unites families, communities and schools to help these children.
